MOXEE

social media crossroads

March 28th, 2012 / 4 COMMENTS

I promised you all that I would talk about my whole re-branding process, switching from Moxee to just Breanna Rose. I’ve talked about inspiration, colors, and typography, but wanted to bring up some important things I found while researching social media. When you go through a name change, you have to take think about all of your accounts. After all, I wouldn’t want my twitter or pinterest still calling me moxee, would I?? Nope! Turns out, going through all these changes aren’t as bad as one may think. Let’s break down some of the biggest social media outlets, shall we??

TWITTER : Twitter is the biggest platform I use not only for communicating with my readers, but in general. Turns out you can easily change your user + display name here, all in your personalized settings. After you switch, you’ll want to send out a tweet showcasing your new twitter handle. In fact, you may want to do this a couple times, spanned throughout a couple of days, so as many of your followers see it as possible.

FACEBOOK : Facebook is another large communication platform, but unfortunately, they’re not as friendly with changing your name. If your facebook fanpage has more than 100 “likes,” then you’re out of luck and your name cannot be changed. You’ll have to start over! This has been the only hurdle I could find in my research. I know I’ll have to start fresh on facebook, but there are always ways of redirecting your visitors there via tweets, old facebook page posts, and much more! Get creative.

BLOGLOVIN : I know bloglovin isn’t as popular as twitter, facebook, or other readers, but I’ve certainly found it to be key in communicating new posts with readers. There’s a huge audience over there just waiting for you to tap into. Unfortunately, in your personalized settings, you can’t just go in and change your name + RSS feed. The good news is that if you contact support, they’ll do it for you!!

PINTEREST : The bad news here is that sources to your old posts won’t direct to your new blog. However, if you’d like your username to match, that’s easy! Simply head on over to your settings to change all that.

Hope this helps give a little insight as to what happens when all of your usernames need to change for that cohesiveness factor! Oh, and those colors used above in the photo are from my new color palette. Sneak peek!

I wanted to update you all on my business rebranding process so far! Ever since coming to a crossroads and hearing all of your opinions, I’m been extremely motivated to get things off the ground! When I have an idea, I go for it … that’s just how I am. Needless to say, I’m very close to launching everything. Early April it is!

I’ve already rebranded myself, designed ( + coded ) my new portfolio, designed a matching blog, and made business cards. So, I thought I’d share a little peek into what’s going on. The above image is from making my own business cards last night. DIY cards sure are friendly to my wallet! And below that, you’ll see just a few fonts that are being used in my brand. I don’t want to share the finished product just yet, so I thought this would be fun for now!

and so the process begins

As I mentioned last week, I’m in the process of evaluating my business + blog and how they interact. It’s official : I will be slowly switching over to branding myself as BREANNA ROSE, not moxee. Within the next month or so, the name moxee will be gone. Don’t worry – I’ll still have everything ( including this blog ), but the name will simply be different. I’ll let you all know exactly what’s going on as it happens.

I also decided to blog in real time about my process. I heard from a LOT of you going through just the same thing … so why not share my thoughts along the way?? First up, you can see my very own moodboard above! All imagery can be found on this pin board of mine with their appropriate sources. I normally have a hard time designing for myself, so I decided to try the exact same process I use with my clients. I set up a pin board for myself and pinned away, following my gut. I let everything I was thinking of fit into that one place and didn’t look at it until I was finished. Turns out, my mind was pretty cohesive in the end. My pins in the beginning were all fairly bright / happy. Then, I noticed that everything began to turn neutral in tone. It’s funny because I think that explains my personality to a TEE. I’m quite a quirky person, but have a solid work ethic and know what I want. It balances the crazy / calm in me.

I want my brand to be reflect myself and embody not only my personality, but how I fit into the design world. I can honestly say that what you’re looking at above feels right. Now … on to the logo! I’ve been working on that behind the scenes for some time and will be showing you all little snippets shortly.

crossroads

I’m not sure all of you know this, but moxee began as a senior project while in undergrad. Not only that, but it wasn’t a blog. It was an online magazine. Obviously, things have naturally morphed and changed over time here under the same name / branding. Moxee has become an extension of myself … I’m an open book and have loved getting to know my readers and sharing my thoughts + what inspires me. It’s 100% my favorite part of what I do.

With that said, there’s a huge part of me that no longer feels attached to the name moxee and what it used to be. After graduation, I had absolutely no idea that I would be working for myself as a freelance designer so soon. I still really can’t believe it. I continued on under the name moxee because it’s what got me where I am today. However, that name feels so much like my past as I find myself at a crossroads with new + exciting opportunities. I am and will always be BREANNA ROSE, but I can’t say the same with moxee.

This has been on my mind for quite awhile, so after reading Jessica’s take on things today, I knew I had to get some more insight, since I’m finding myself in the exact same position. See that picture up there? That’s me! It pretty much sums up how I feel right now. I have high hopes and dreams for my future and couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come. But at the same time, it’s a bit overwhelming.

So now, I’m asking for your help / thoughts! Branding myself under my name, breanna rose, would no doubt give me a larger umbrella to work under. It’s me. The only thing holding me back is knowing how big of a change it is. I’m known throughout the internet world as moxee. Twitter, facebook, etc. Those things would all have to change, too, which makes me nervous. I promise that I’m putting a lot of thought into this. I tend to be rather impatient and make quick decisions, but I know this is bigger than that and deserves time + attention. I’d really love to hear all of your insight, since you guys are a big concern of mine. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t stop blogging or anything drastic. It’s a branding / name change that I’m considering. I don’t want to throw anyone off, but also want to follow my heart.
