What’s hot and what’s not in the world of Dubai interior design?

Dubai is one of the most glamorous and affluent cities in the world, so it’s no surprise that residents like to present their homes in the best possible way. There are certainly plenty of shops for you to visit if you’re keen to stock up on interior design goods while in the emirate. Whether you’re after lavish furniture, beautiful rugs, unusual ornaments or anything else, you won’t be disappointed.

interior designAs the city’s ever changing skyline indicates, Dubai property does not stay still. Decorating trends are constantly evolving. Whereas last year, vintage items, natural materials and floral prints were big news, 2014 is likely to be dominated by fresher, more contemporary designs for the home.

In terms of colour, yellow may prove a hit among consumers this year. Other bold hues such as red and blue are likely to be popular too. However, if you’re thinking of adding a splash of vibrant colour to your home, make sure the overall effect is balanced with some neutral shades. When it comes to vivid shades, it is certainly possible to have too much of a good thing!

Another top trend for 2014 concerns ethnic prints. The city’s style-conscious consumers are expected to use colourful fabrics inspired by Mexican, Spanish and African designs. If this idea appeals to you, why not hang the fabrics from your walls? These statement art pieces can make impressive focal points within rooms, and thanks to the abundance of fabric stalls in Dubai’s many markets, you won’t be stuck for choice.

If you’re keen to create a completely different look, you might want to follow the example of one homeowner in Fairmont Residences on the Palm, who has paid homage to classical European design with his decadent pad. The businessman has filled his home with classical reproduction pieces, giving it a truly indulgent look. Among the most notable design features are solid oak parquet flooring and custom-made wall and ceiling mouldings.

What with the 2013 Downtown Design Fair and Creative Conference focussing the world’s attention on Dubai and new plans getting in gear for this coming autumn, it’s rapidly becoming a place synonymous with innovation and creativity, in all strands of design. So whichever interior style you’re seeking to emulate this year, make sure you really pull out all the stops. In Dubai, half measures simply won’t cut it.
